Reflexologists Remit

Reflexologists Remit

Reflexology is there to offer clients a complementary health therapy that can be effective in promoting deep relaxation and wellbeing; reducing stress in people’s lives can be key in optimising good health and building resilience. It is a touch therapy that is based on the theory that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body and reflexologists work these points and areas.

However reflexology is viewed, there can be no doubt that what it does provide is a period of time for relaxation where the client has one to one attention and supportive touch in an empathetic listening environment. Reflexology can be used safely alongside standard healthcare to promote better health for their clients.

All reflexologists must abide by the
CAP / ASA guidance
to stay legal and compliant with advertising rules.

When a reflexologist qualifies as a practitioner at Level 3 or 5, they are able to:

  • Provide the Reflexology they have learned during their course

  • Work with all clients, with any condition, as long as it is
    • Covered by their insurance
    • Not a contraindication for any Professional Body or organisation they belong to (this list may differ between organisations.)
    • Not deemed unsuitable for the client by a medical practitioner
    • A situation the therapist is comfortable with

  • Write treatment plans

  • Give reflexology advice and aftercare information including:
    • Drinking water and fluids
    • What to expect after the treatment
    • Signposting for the client to find out further information for themselves (Examples: sending clients a link to an NHS website for exercises or signposting the client to find out more information out about an alternative product or service – without recommending it.)
  • Continue to learn and grow through CPD and incorporate the new skills into their treatments

Reflexologists cannot:

  • Diagnose
  • Claim to treat a condition specifically
  • Cure a condition
  • Recommend a product or service which they are not trained in

Setting expectations at the training level allows Graduates to move forwards understanding their obligations and their boundaries. This information protects them as a business owner from spreading mis-communication and getting fined for doing the wrong thing.

We would ask all training schools to consider reinforcing the remit of a reflexologist into their course to bring transparency.

Thank you all for your ongoing support and understanding
